Windows 10 ESU Extended to 2027: Eligibility, Cost and Upgrade Plan

Saturday, October 3, 2026

Windows 10 reached the end of its standard support lifecycle on October 14, 2025. Computers running it did not suddenly stop working, but they stopped receiving normal free Windows 10 security fixes, software updates and technical support.

Microsoft’s Consumer Extended Security Updates program provides eligible home users with additional critical and important security updates while they prepare to upgrade or replace their computers.

Microsoft’s current official page says Consumer ESU will continue through October 12, 2027. Users already enrolled will receive the extended coverage automatically without enrolling again.

What Is Windows 10 ESU?

ESU stands for Extended Security Updates. The consumer program allows eligible Windows 10 computers to continue receiving security updates classified by Microsoft as critical or important.

It is intended to reduce security risk while users move to Windows 11 or another supported platform. It does not restore Windows 10 to normal full support.

  • Supports eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 devices
  • Delivers critical and important security updates
  • Runs through October 12, 2027
  • Does not include new features or general product improvements
  • Does not include technical support

Microsoft’s earlier end-of-support date remains unchanged. Standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; ESU is a separate transition program. Microsoft Consumer ESU information

Who Can Enrol in Consumer ESU?

Eligible Windows editions

Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 22H2 Home, Professional, Pro Education and Workstations editions. The computer should have the latest available Windows updates installed before enrolment.

Administrator account

The Microsoft account used for enrolment must be an administrator account on the device. A child account cannot be used. People who normally use a local Windows account may be asked to sign in with a Microsoft account during enrolment.

Consumer device requirement

Consumer ESU is not intended for managed commercial computers. Enrolment is generally unavailable for kiosk devices, computers joined to Active Directory or Microsoft Entra, and devices enrolled in mobile-device management. Organisations should use the separate commercial ESU process.

How Much Does Windows 10 ESU Cost?

Microsoft currently lists three consumer enrolment routes:

  1. Enrol at no additional cost by synchronising eligible PC settings.
  2. Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
  3. Make a one-time purchase of US$30 or the local-currency equivalent, plus applicable taxes.

Available choices and timing may vary by country or region. Rely on the options shown inside Windows Update. An existing consumer ESU licence can be applied to as many as 10 eligible Windows 10 devices.

How to Enrol in Windows 10 ESU

1. Confirm the Windows version

Open Start > Settings > System > About. Check the Windows edition and version. An eligible consumer computer should be running Windows 10 version 22H2.

2. Install current updates

Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install applicable updates and restart when required.

3. Find the enrolment option

Return to Windows Update. An eligible device should display an ESU enrolment link or an Enrol now option. Select it and follow the instructions shown.

4. Sign in safely

Use a personal Microsoft account for which you have administrator access. Verify the sign-in page, ensure recovery information is current and never disclose your password or verification code to an agent.

5. Verify enrolment

After completion, reopen Windows Update and confirm that the computer is enrolled. Do not rely only on an email receipt or payment notification.

What ESU Includes—and What It Does Not

ESU provides ESU does not provide
Critical and important Windows 10 security updates New Windows features
Updates delivered through Windows Update Full Windows 10 technical support
Additional transition time Permanent Windows 10 support
Coverage for eligible enrolled devices Protection against every cyber threat

ESU cannot compensate for weak passwords, malicious downloads, stolen accounts, outdated third-party software or an already-compromised computer.

Does Windows 10 Still Work Without ESU?

Yes. End of support does not remotely disable Windows 10. Applications, files and connected devices may continue to work. The problem is that an unenrolled system no longer receives normal operating-system security fixes.

The security gap can grow as new vulnerabilities are discovered. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 on compatible hardware or replacing an incompatible computer. Microsoft Windows 10 support guidance

Should You Choose ESU or Upgrade Now?

Situation Practical approach
Computer officially supports Windows 11 Back up files and plan the supported upgrade
Important application needs testing Use ESU temporarily while checking compatibility
Special hardware lacks a Windows 11 driver Check the manufacturer’s support information
Computer is too old for Windows 11 Use ESU while planning replacement or another supported system
Workplace-managed computer Follow the employer’s IT process

How to Check Windows 11 Compatibility

Windows Update can display whether a computer is eligible. Microsoft’s PC Health Check application can also assess the device.

The principal minimum requirements include a compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI firmware, Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with WDDM 2.0 and a suitable high-definition display.

Meeting only the RAM and storage requirements is not sufficient. Processor support, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot capability also matter. Official Windows 11 requirements

Do Not Bypass Requirements Casually

Unofficial installation modifications can create update, driver, recovery and compatibility problems. First determine whether TPM or Secure Boot simply needs to be enabled in the computer’s firmware. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified technician when firmware settings are unfamiliar.

Back Up Before Upgrading

Back up documents, photographs, browser bookmarks, email archives, accounting files, projects, software licence information and password-manager recovery information.

Open several copied files from the backup destination to confirm that they are readable. For important data, maintain more than one copy and keep at least one copy separated from the computer.

Check Applications and Peripherals

Check Windows 11 compatibility for printers, scanners, accounting software, VPN applications, security tools, professional equipment, accessibility devices and organisation-specific programs. Download drivers only from the genuine manufacturer website.

What About Microsoft 365?

Microsoft states that Microsoft 365 applications on Windows 10 are no longer operating on a supported Windows configuration. However, Microsoft 365 Apps security updates on Windows 10 are scheduled to continue through October 10, 2028. The OneDrive desktop application on Windows 10 version 22H2 is also scheduled to receive updates through that date.

This does not extend Windows 10 itself to 2028. Windows ESU and Microsoft 365 application updates have different scopes and end dates. Microsoft 365 Apps guidance

A Practical Transition Plan

Immediately

  • Confirm ESU enrolment and install applicable updates.
  • Update browsers and frequently used applications.
  • Create and test a backup.
  • Review Microsoft account recovery settings.

During the next month

  • Run PC Health Check.
  • Identify incompatible software and peripherals.
  • Estimate upgrade or replacement costs.
  • Decide whether the computer will be upgraded, replaced or repurposed.

Before ESU ends

  • Move to a supported operating system.
  • Transfer and verify personal files.
  • Sign out of accounts on the old computer.
  • Securely erase personal data before selling or recycling it.

Windows 10 ESU Scam Warning Signs

Be cautious when someone promises lifetime Windows 10 updates, sells a permanent ESU key, requests remote access, asks for an OTP or Microsoft password, uses a personal payment account, asks you to disable antivirus protection or provides modified installation files.

Complete enrolment through Windows Update and independently opened Microsoft pages.
