India’s workforce includes millions of people working outside conventional salaried employment. Construction labourers, domestic workers, street vendors, agricultural labourers, home-based producers, delivery partners, drivers and other self-employed or casual workers may not have the formal employment records available to people covered by EPFO or ESIC.
The e-Shram portal was created to build a national database of unorganised workers and provide each registered worker with a permanent Universal Account Number. Registration can help eligible workers discover connected welfare, employment and skill-development services. However, an e-Shram card does not automatically provide a monthly payment, pension, insurance claim or Government job.
What Is e-Shram?
e-Shram is the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW). The portal records information including identity, occupation, address, skills and employment category. A registered worker receives a permanent 12-digit e-Shram UAN.
The e-Shram UAN is different from the UAN used for an EPFO provident-fund account.

Who Can Register?
The official framework covers eligible home-based, self-employed and wage workers in the unorganised sector who are not covered by EPFO or ESIC. Depending on the actual work arrangement, this may include construction workers, domestic workers, street vendors, agricultural labourers, landless farmers, artisans, tailors, carpenters, fish workers, drivers, loaders, migrant workers, waste collectors, delivery partners and other platform workers.
Basic eligibility conditions
- The worker should generally be aged 16 or above.
- The person should genuinely be engaged in eligible unorganised work.
- The applicant should not be an EPFO or ESIC member.
- Government-funded NPS members are excluded.
- The official FAQ says the applicant should not be an income-tax payer.
- No minimum educational qualification is prescribed merely for registration.
Individual pension, insurance, health or employment schemes can impose separate age, income and other eligibility rules. Registration does not override them.
Documents and Information Required
For normal online self-registration, the worker needs an Aadhaar number and a mobile number linked with Aadhaar for OTP authentication.
A worker without an Aadhaar-linked mobile number may use an authorised Common Service Centre (CSC) or State Seva Kendra and complete the available biometric-authentication process.
Other fields may include address, state and district, primary and secondary occupations, education, skills, employment category, bank details, current work location and migrant-worker status. The exact form can change, so every entry should be reviewed before submission.
How to Register on e-Shram
1. Open the official portal
Visit eshram.gov.in directly. A website containing words such as “e-Shram,” “labour card” or “Government benefit” is not necessarily official.
2. Select worker registration
Choose the route intended for an unorganised worker. Platform workers should use the applicable platform-worker route when displayed.
3. Verify the Aadhaar-linked mobile
Enter a number controlled by the worker and complete OTP verification personally. Never reveal the OTP to a caller, recruiter, pension agent or unknown operator.
4. Complete Aadhaar authentication
Confirm that the name, date of birth, gender and photograph match the Aadhaar record.
5. Select the correct occupation
Choose the activity that accurately represents the main source of income. Do not choose a more technical occupation merely because it appears likely to receive more benefits.
6. Add address, skills and work information
Enter residential and employment details accurately. Migrant workers should distinguish permanent and present addresses where separate fields are provided. Do not claim qualifications or skills the worker does not possess.
7. Review bank information
If bank details are requested, verify the account holder’s name, account number and IFSC. Never share a PIN, UPI PIN, card CVV or online-banking password.
8. Submit and download the card
Save the UAN, card and acknowledgement securely. Do not post the complete card publicly.
What Benefits Does an e-Shram Card Provide?
The direct benefit is a recognised worker record and permanent UAN. The database can support identification of eligible workers, portability for migrants, connections to employment and skill services, welfare information and government planning.
e-Shram is an entry point. It does not replace the application, contribution, approval or claim process of each connected programme.
Does Registration Give Automatic Cash?
No. Registration by itself does not promise an automatic monthly cash transfer. Be suspicious of claims such as “every cardholder gets ₹1,000,” “₹2 lakh will be credited immediately,” “pay a fee to activate Government money,” or “registration guarantees a Government job.”
Is ₹3,000 Pension Included Automatically?
No. The frequently mentioned ₹3,000 pension relates to the separate Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan (PM-SYM) contributory pension scheme. PM-SYM has its own entry age, income, contribution and exclusion rules. Under its applicable terms, an eligible subscriber contributes monthly and the assured pension becomes payable after age 60—not immediately after e-Shram registration. Verify current conditions through maandhan.in.
Does the Card Include Automatic Insurance?
Do not assume so. Insurance schemes have separate eligibility, enrolment, consent, bank-account and premium requirements. An e-Shram card alone does not prove that a policy is active or that a claim will be approved.
Platform and Gig Workers
Eligible delivery partners, ride-hailing drivers, logistics workers, home-service providers and other app-mediated workers should use the appropriate platform-worker registration route and enter the aggregator relationship accurately. Connected benefits and verification procedures can change; check the live dashboard before relying on any claim.
How to Update an e-Shram Profile
The card does not expire and annual renewal is not required. Workers should update changes to their mobile number, address, occupation, education, skills, bank details, employment category and migration status through the portal or an authorised CSC.
A worker who later enters formal employment covered by EPFO or ESIC should not continue claiming eligibility based on outdated information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is e-Shram registration free?
Yes. Workers are not required to pay a registration charge.
Does the card expire?
No. It has no expiry period and does not require annual renewal, though profile details should remain current.
Can an EPFO member register?
The current eligibility conditions exclude EPFO members from registration as unorganised workers.
Is an Aadhaar-linked mobile compulsory?

Is there a last date?
The official FAQ currently says registration is available continuously and has no general last date.
Where can a worker complain?
Use the e-Shram helpdesk at 14434 or 1800-889-6811, or visit gms.eshram.gov.in.
Conclusion
e-Shram gives an eligible unorganised worker a permanent digital record and 12-digit UAN. Its value depends on accurate information, a current profile and separate applications for any pension, insurance, health, housing, ration, job or training programme.
The card does not expire, registration is free and there is no current general deadline. Most importantly, e-Shram should be treated as a gateway—not a guarantee of cash, insurance, pension or employment.
